DIY Magnesium Bicarbonate

Make your Magnesium Bicarbonate at home! It’s easy, generally well tolerated, and cost efficient. It can be your main form of Magnesium or you can compliment another Magnesium form that you use to replenish your Magnesium stores on a daily basis. For instance, I like to use a Magnesium Malate in the morning and bicarbonate throughout the day in my adrenal cocktails (includes potassium and sodium).

Importance of Magnesium:

Magnesium is one of our major minerals, an important electrolyte that helps to maintain our nutrient status, body’s stress response, and is critical for the function of over 3500+ enzymatic reactions in the body. It also is required in order for our cell’s to make ATP, our bodies form of cellular energy and keeps our cellular health nourished! Our body’s have a Magnesium Burn Rate (MBR) which can increase in seasons of stress (and as we age) requiring a higher intake of replenishment to support adequate Magnesium reserves.

Supplementing with some form of Magnesium is important as we don’t get much from our food system and stressor from our modern way of life add metabolic stressors that often use up our Magnesium stores very quickly.

What is Magnesium Bicarbonate:

Magnesium bicarbonate is essentially a bicarbonate salt of Magnesium. You can make it by mixing Magnesium Hydroxide and carbonated water to create a bicarbonate form of Magnesium.

What you’ll need:

1 tsp of Magnesium Hydroxide (my favorite is Crucial Four - ccwellness for discount)

1 liter of carbonated water

Silicone Funnel or another cylinder to quickly get magnesium in water

Tsp measuring spoon

Instructions:

  1. Make sure your carbonated water is cold and from a glass bottle — have it in the fridge for at least an hour before planning to make the mixture

  2. Slowly remove from fridge and gently place in your sink

  3. Grab your funnel and tsp to have them handy. Slowly remove cap of water, place the funnel at the top, and add 1 tsp of magnesium hydroxide.

  4. Quickly close the water bottle and shake for 30-60 seconds. Place in fridge for about 30 minutes, then proceed to shake the bottle again.

  5. After a couple of hours, remove from fridge, shake, and use for your drinks!

Here is a great video that will help show you how to make it using my favorite form of magnesium hydroxide by Crucial Four

Recommended Use:

Start with 1 oz twice per day. You can slowly increase over time as your body adjusts, eventually drinking up to 6-8oz a day but remember to slowly build up to that.

Approximately 1 oz of Mag Bicarb equates to 89mg of Magnesium.

Keep in mind that not everyone will tolerate Magnesium bicarbonate. If you take too much for your system, it can cause an increase in motility.

You can add Magnesium Bicarbonate to your Adrenal Cocktails, smoothies, water, or really any liquid.

Brands that have already made Bicarbonate mixtures:

Live Pristine (contains other electrolytes as well)

Mitigate Stress
